UNiT X

New Talent & Creative Partnerships.

UNIT X OFFERS STUDENTS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE ACROSS DISCIPLINES WITHIN MANCHESTER SCHOOL OF ART AT MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY. THESE COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS ENHANCE STUDENTS’ EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS, ALLOWING THEM TO GAIN EXPERIENCE OF CREATIVE INDUSTRY AND BOOST THEIR PROFESSIONAL CONFIDENCE.

Over 1,000 students take part each year from 12 undergraduate programmes, creating new works in response to live project briefs set with national and international professional partners.Accompanying unit x, the inspirer programme brings high-profile, national and international creative professionals to the school of art. These outstanding practitioners deliver ‘masterclasses’ with the aim of motivating students through a series of seminars, lectures and workshops.

WORK

Unit X 2020 consists of 18 project briefs designed to intellectually, creatively and professionally challenge the students taking part. Students are asked to think differently; to interrogate a range of subject areas; to work in groups; to work collaboratively; and to respond in an experimental and innovative manner.

This year, the Coronavirus pandemic intervened, forcing students to reconsider and develop even more creative, problem-solving skills. Despite the multiple challenges faced by the students -often personal, sometimes physical, almost always technical- they have produced excellent work across the board.

At Manchester School of Art, we are extremely proud of the fortitude the students have shown. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of the students, that they have responded with maturity and produced such high-quality work for this online festival.
